How I Became a Topical Stamp Collector

I started my venture in philately,  as a traditional stamp collector and, consequently, was faced with the daunting task of finding stamps from all issuing countries of the world to fill in bulky worldwide stamp albums.

After having bought all the stamps mixtures available at the stamp shops, I still needed to acquire more stamps and thought my only other option was to exchange my duplicates at the local stamp club.  

I participated to weekly reunions at local stamp clubs, but found myself without real progress in my stamp quest as the majority of stamp collectors were in the same position I was and we had almost the same duplicates.

I then decided to subscribe to a stamp approval mail order service. Each month, I would receive an envelope with various glassines containing series of stamps from worldwide countries. I could pick and choose the series I wanted to add to my collection and send back the unwanted with payment for those I kept.

A couple of years down the road, I was still faced with uncomplete pages in my albums.

Still seeking a solution, I went online. First encounter: Ebay. It was awesome! I picked up some very nice stamps that I would never have found in the local stamp stores.

But...a question kept pounding in my head...
 
"How to acquire more worldwide stamps to fill up my stamp albums?"

I was seriously out of options.  "There must be an easier way to collect stamps!"

Suddenly, one day, it hit me: " I should be the one deciding what I want to collect!"

And the solution to all my frustrations unveiled itself:

"Start a Topical Stamp Collection!"

The display pages of my collection would always be full! No more empty spaces. Eureka!

Furthermore, my collection would grow accordingly to the budget and time I had defined for it.

Can you hear my one grateful sigh of relief..? 

But on the other side, I couldn't even think about parting with my worldwide stamp collection, so decided to sort them in a different manner: by topical subjects instead of by countries:

Animals (Domestic, Wild, Endangered Species)
Birds (even drilled them down by species)
Flowers, Butterflies, Mushrooms
Sports (Golf, Ski, Tennis, Soccer, etc)
Royalty (Kings, Queens, Royal subjects, etc )
Transportation (Cars, Airplanes, Ships, Trains, etc)

WOW !! was this fun. It was the beginning of a "stamp storytelling" adventure. Each little piece of miniature art, that is a postage stamp, now had even more appeal!

Instead of accumulating stamps, I was now appreciating them for the story they each conveyed.

Had it been affixed to an envelope? I could see the date of departure and sometimes the date of arrival to destination. What a great way to dwelve into postal history. 

Was it a fresh, mint never hinged copy acquired from over postal outlet counters or from a certified agency representing countries postal administrations? I could admire the clean design and learn what commemorative event prompted its printing.

A new journey into the joy of stamp collecting just began and new horizons were unveiling themself....

 

All duplicates could now be grouped into thematic categories and mounted as mini-topical collections to sell on auction sites like Ebay or other sites specializing in stamps collectables.

"Stamping" online is a great way to connect with other stamp collectors inside philatelic forums, while developing great social skills at the same time.
